3D from 'Bi-Ocular' Microscopes

Seems to me there *is* a technique for getting 3D from the two-eyepiece
binocular microscope.
I seem to recall a method involving differently polarized light from
different directions under the slide stage or else polarizing filters split
across the objective and complementary filters at the eyepieces.
Kind of like single lens 3D, only different.
Before video assist, I think this was the only way to get 3D at 200-250
magnifications, though with quite shallow depth.
