Without a "ball head" on a monopod, it is not possible to use it in the
manner you describe, unless you are taking pictures of things above.

I have one such monopod.  Do I need two for stereo?  Is a tripod with
one leg collapsed a "stereopod?"

My broken monopod was complaining, but it didn't have a leg to stand on.
