As you probably remember 'Out the Window 3D' was entered
in the First Ever 3D Movie/Video Competition. I was really
looking forward to seeing the video at the competition:
Honorable Mention: John Williamson for `Out The Window 3D'.
Almost 27 minutes in length, it is the longest stereoscopic 3D
computer animated video ever created. It was a collection of
state of the art computer animation, set to a professional music
score, in the same vein as the popular "Mind's Eye" series.
It was created on 2 IBM PCs, including all sound, music, editing
and composition. Approximately 82,000 individual frames were
rendered to create the video. At the end we were treated to
previews of coming attractions `Washington State in 3D' (NSA
convention?) and `Mech. Battle'. John was awarded a stack
of Ray Zone 3D comics. Copies of this video are available for
$29.95 plus shipping and handling from: John Williamson,
Legba Studios, 9811 Ravenna Ave. NE, Seattle, WA 98115

The video placed 10 out of 15 entries. It suffered from the
judging criteria. Titles will not be a judging criterion at the
Second Ever 'Stereoscopic' 3D Movie/Video Competition
due to this. Also since the video is short clips it suffered in
the 'story' category. The video is the perfect piece to show
off 3D video (next to 'Concerto in 3D' from VRex).
John Williamson was at NSA '97. He showed part of this
video and some others. He told me he was working on
some new stuff and I should look for him to enter the
next 3D Video competition.
One last comment on the video. It included a lot of
fly throughs and 'video game' type sets. I am not a
'gamer', so these didn't impress me too much. Even
though they were nicely done. It is the world's longest
stereoscopic 3D computer animated video ever created.
But, it felt like the longest 3D animated video. I would have
liked to see it move a little faster. Since it is short scenes,
I guess it doesn't have to be watched in one sitting. I have
not (yet) purchased a copy for my collection.
