All kidding aside, I would like to extend my praise of the View Magic
over-under print viewer.
About a year ago when my son was nine years old he asked if he could
take pictures like his dad (slides from an Owla at the time). I
quickly taped two disposable cameras together and we went on our
first stereo photo trip together. At that same time I ordered a View
Magic from Joel Alpers (Rocky Mountain Memories). I had seen one for
the first time when expo2 came around (I was lucky to be at the head
of the line). I sent off the film to be developed and spent the next
week hearing "Is it here yet, dad?" Once back I quickly mounted the
prints (a breeze with the accompanying template) and we were enjoying
my son's first 3d pictures. Yes, the quality of those disposable
cameras were bad, but it was a start. We quickly went out and bought
two cheap 35 mm cameras and mounted them on a piece of aluminum angle
with rubber bands. My son continued to use this set up, becoming good
enough at pressing both shutters at once to actually stop a waterfall
(if you don't believe me I have the pictures to prove it).
The pictures and viewer have been at hit at school show and tell, and
family gatherings. Children that seem to have a hard time seeing 3d
with my slides and red button, have no problem at all with the View
Magic. It is also great to see people's reaction when they see the
flat print first and then look through the viewer. I have seen many
look in the viewer, then look without, then look with the viewer in
almost disbelief at what they see.
I couldn't contain myself at NSA and bought my son a synched pair of
Canon's (again from Joel at Rocky Mountain Memories). He shot eight
rolls (four pairs) at the NSA Convention and the trip home to Idaho.
He has a real eye for stereo composition and a real artist's streak.
It is truly wonderful to love something as much as I do stereo
photography and to be able to share it with my son. And it all
started (more or less) with the View Magic over-under print viewer.
Thanks for the time,
