Re Bas relief
Adam L. Beckerman posted "I'd still like to have someone give me a more
detailed description of what a bas relief is, and how it is created. I'm
looking forward to hearing about it..."
I am not shure that the context is the same but the term Bas relief is
used to denote a type of combined picture and sculpture which is cut in low
relief of a centimetre or so . They were much used by the ancients such as
the Egyptians perhaps because they had not developed the concept of
perspective in their paintings. Originaly I think they were painted as well
but the paint has long gone on most of the old ones , the advantage seems
to have been to introduce shadows to the image which would change as the
sun moved across the sky as with a real scene. The original post which was
by Dalia I think may have been to do with photographing them in stereo to
preserve the relief better . Something I have wondered about myself
although the relief is not great and can work quite well in 2D because of
the shadows but a stereo view should be nearer to viewing the originals.
