You can spend a tremendous amount of time in pursuit of something, never
to really understand it or master it. History is full of examples: Lee
DeForest ("father" of the radio tube), Antonio Salieri (Mozart's failed
contemporary), Eric Goldstein (who??) 88-)

The other cautions I'd add here are that: (1) sometimes the line between
expert
*opinions* and expert *facts* as expressed on this list is mighty
blurry, and (2) we have certainly seen expert *facts* turn out to be
expert *fallicies* any number of times.

May I suggest that the best possible assemblage for a good enlightened
discourse on any subject (including stereo photograph) is a broad and
diverse one, representative of all kinds of experience and of all levels
of expertise? I personally enjoy hearing from and learning from the
newbies as much or more than anyone else, and I have learned the hard
way not to place too high a premium on the opinions and advice of
"experts"; too many times they have told me why a certain thing cannot
be accomplished, and after it was accomplished they have provided
exhaustive explanations of why it must not be so!
