|Agreed that it is ridiculous, but television stations receive just such crazy
|calls daily. As the internet becomes more turn key, more mainstream and more of a
|mass communication medium, so will it begin to experience all of the joys and
|frustrations of dealing with the mass audiences...

Yes - another analogy I used to use was what did you have to do if
you didn't want to have mail piling up in your mailbox at your house
when you are on vacation (assuming you still *have* house delivery :-)

You can:

1. Tell the post office to hold your mail till you get back.
2. Have a friend come by every day and pick up what was delivered that day.
3. Tell all your friends and "junk mail" people to stop sending you stuff
until you tell them that they can send it again.

The parallel to the mailing list is...

1. Send a message to listserv saying to stop the incoming e-mail.
2. Set a .forward message to relay your mail to another account (assuming
you have the ability to do this)
3. Send the STOP message to the entire population of the listserv.

It's amazing though how many people DO NOT see the parallel, or at least
can't see why option #3 isn't practical...I gave up trying to explain
it this way.

Incidentally, I finally took pity on our "stop or I'll sue" overseas
friend (a world court case?) and manually unsubbed him. He never did send
anything to the listserv as far as I can tell.
