Stereo Imaging in Science and Technology

  • From: P3D Dr. George A. Themelis <fj834@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>

This is the title of my stereo slide presentation next Tuesday for the
Cleveland Stereo club. I would like to get some input from P3D members
familiar with technical applications of 3d. I am attempting to classify
the images into 4 groups:

* Normal Stereo
     - Documentation: Equipment or processes are documented in stereo
          for training, education.
     - Remote imaging/control: Stereoscopic imaging in areas
           inaccessible by humans.
* Hyperstereo
     - Topographical: aerial photogrammetry
     - Study of distant objects: Natural phenomena (clouds, etc.), moon
* Hypostereo
     - close-up (0.2-0.5X): experimental setups, documentation.
     - macro (0.5X-5X): study small objects, rocks, minerals, small
       details not seen properly by bare eyes.
     - Low power (5X-100X): Stereo microscope, study small objects.
     - High power (>100X): SEM stereo pairs.
* Other applications
     - Stereoscopic displays: 3D information collected by various (non-
          photographic, usually mapping) methods is presented
          stereoscopically.
     - Computer modeling: Same as above but information is generated by
          the computer.  Educational applications.
     - Retinal rivalry: Stereoscopic imaging is used to detect minor
          changes in real objects or photographs via retinal rivalry.
     - Stereoscopic imaging of displacements: Horizontal displacement
          information is converted to depth which allows visualization
          of displacement fields.

What else?

George Themelis
