Delivery by explaining/confirming

I recently had two opportunities to practice the
delivery/confirming stereo theory.
A. I had a stereo exhibition while I was on a 2 week
sister city visit to Kiryu Jampa. The effort that went
into this exhibition might interest someone. I use
poster frames to exhibit my stereocards. Due either
to a communication gap or some other reason I was
advised to bring the frames with me. I boxed them up
and they were shipped to Japan, along with some
items we needed, by a local printing company. I also
sent two sets of 11x 14 stereo prints in the same box.
All the 20 folks who went to Japan from Columbus
contacted local firms to ask for donations of gifts to
give our host families. We ended up with a garbage bag
full of "goodies" for each family, from fine art prints to T
Shirts with local pictures on them. Muscogee 3-D (thats Me)
donated 20 copies of my stereo book "Back to Basics"
along with 20 lorgnette viewers, with viewing instructions
in Japanese. I asked my fellow visitors to give these books
to their host families the first night we were in Kiryu.
I took the following items with me:
80 Stereocards
Keystone N50 Training Stereoscope
6 lorgnette viewers
A copy of Back to Basics
20 stereo slides (including some from P3d Dick Twichell
and SSA member Brandt Rowles)
Realist Viewer with extra batteries and bulbs
Omniscope viewer for viewing the aforementioned 11 x 14 prints
10 of my best lenticulars
4 diskettes containing 15 of my military stereo images in
anaglyphic format. These anaglyps are quite good I think.
they were done in Spain about six years ago in an effort
sponsored by a California firm to make a Stereo CD ROM,
that "never got off the ground"
10 pair of red/blue glasses for viewing the anaglyphs.
The exhibition took place in the Kiryu City Hall. I mounted 60
of my cards in the poster frames with a lorgnette viewer hanging
on each of them. On the opening day I was present and had my
other stereo items on a nearby table. The city officials of Kiryu
provided me with a computer and a monitor so I could
show my anaglyphs. I don't know how many folks went thru
the first day. But during the three hours I was there it was
non-stop, with everyone viewing, looking and asking questions.
The Stereo Cards SEEMED to be the easiest way to explain
stereography to the folks who attended the exhibition. The
host families had a leg up on the other attendees as they had
had my book for a couple of days. The exhibition of my stereo
cards lasted 8 days.
Did I make any stereo converts? Time will tell although I
think I really got a local photographer (who was nice enough to
take a day off and take me on a photo trip to the mountains) and
the brother of my host family father ( who I gave some hands on
instruction in single camera weight shift stereo my last day in
Japan) interested enough to try it.
Anyway there are 22 lorgnette viewers in Kiryu (I gave the Mayor
two with the set of cards I made for him of Columbus scenes),
plus 4 diskettes of anaglyphs, which have already been copied and
passed on, so maybe something will come of my stereo exhibition.
At our farewell luncheon I made a stereograph of each host family
with their American guest and I will send them all a copy of these
stereo
cards.
B. Last Monday I gave a stereo presentation to the LaGrange Artists
Guild. The presentation took place in the Lamar Dodd Arts Center
at LaGrange College, about 45 miles from Columbus. The setting
was in the Arts Center Projection room, with stadium seating.
I gave my standard stereo presentation- How stereopsis works,
the history of stereo from Wheatsone to 1997, different methods of
making stereographs, including manipulation of mono photos
into stereo, different types of stereographs and their viewing
devices
including books and magazines (Yes I did mention my book "Back
to Basics:). Then I had a show of projected slides, including some
from
Dick Twichell, Brandt Rowles and Klaus Kemper, a German
stereographer.
I also had two poster frames of stereo cards on display showing
Columbus people and places.
Following the slide show and a question and answer period the
45 or so folks in attendance were invited to try out the stereo
items
I had talked about and were displayed on a table. Everyone seemed
to enjoy themselves (I know I sure did) and a lot of questions were
asked. I think I made two converts as two of the women artists told
me they usually pain from photos and stereo would be a big help.
I gave them the address of Reel 3-D and told them to contact me
for further help. I also met a fellow who is trying to do stereo
work and
thought he was alone in the world (Don't that sound familiar)
I even sold several copies of my book which is an added plus.
I was invited by a member of the Troup County Board of Education,
who was at my presentation, o return to LaGrange the 1st week
and make 3 stereo presentations in one day as part of the Troup
County Education System Career Day. I don't think I can convince
some students to take up stereo as a career, but I do believe I
can convince some of them to try to make stereographs. It should
be a fun day stereowise.
