Or could it be a difference in contrast between the originals and the
dupes?  I could see how an increase in local contrast (thereby
sharpening edges and making them stand out) could make objects stand
out against one another.  Unsharp masking (which is a different
process that uses a separate sheet of film) is done specifically to
get this effect.

Depending on how you duplicate the slide there might not be much
difference in resolution (e.g., contact printing vs. slide copier
attachments that use a camera's optics), but there would likely be
contrast and color shifts.  Were the slides copied onto regular slide
film, or copy film (which is formulated to try and make up for the
contrast change in copying)?
