VM 500 condenser lenses

Tom Martin asks about replacement
lenses for the Stereomatic 500.
I took part of my VM 500 Stereomatic
projector to my friendly local camera
repair man last year. He said he could =

replace the two mirrors which had lost
much of their silvering. This he did very
nicely , but then in re-assembling one
of the units he crushed one of the
condenser lenses. He didn't know
what to do (apart from keep more than
an arms length away from me when =

he told me). I took the broken and
unbroken units to a small firm
in a nearby town who make lenses
for eye glasses. They liked the
challenge , and measured the optical
characteristics of the lens on some
clever looking machinery. They then =

ordered the appropriate lens , which
when it arrived they ground down to
the correct diameter. The setup has
worked fine ever since. I didn't bother
with any "colour matching" of the
lens , and notice no problems.
