Compression

I know most people are thinking of digital compression but what
first came in my mind when I read the question is the anamorphic
(optical) compression what Lois and Manley Koehler use with their
Minolta cameras for wide-screen stereo projection.  I have seen
an original (compressed) stereo slide.  Makes people look slimmer
but I don't know if it takes any depth away because the entire
x-direction is compressed.
