Compression of contrast range is also found in our photographic films
(negative and positive) and papers. Virtually none of them are linear,
especially at the extremes (resulting in the so-called "heel" and "toe"
regions).

Is there a sensory recording system or medium which does *not* exhibit
some form of non-linearity or compression?
