Collecting stereo images
I guess more fruitful than arguing about stereotypes would be
to ask people why they are collecting the things they do.
I bet many VM collectors will mention childhood memories for
their love for 3d. Perhaps women are more affected by these
memories than men? (Pure speculation...)
There are (older) people who don't consider View Master reels
as collectible because they were available for sale new at their
time... The same way that many younger VM collectors do not
consider blister VM packages as collectibles.
There are stereo view collectors that don't consider any cards
made in the 20th century as collectibles. Too fresh for them.
There are collectors that don't collect curved views, only
flat and pre-1880s.
I personally collect stereo views and View Masters for their
stereo images and not collectible value.
A relatively new collecting area are amateur Realist-format
stereo slides from the 50s and 60s (also, but more rare, VM
personal reels). I find that these amateur views have a
charm that is often missing in professional/commercial work.
