Mark Dottle proposes an interesting strategy for selecting one's
best images for "public showing":

That might be true but at the same time it is rather limitting because
some of the best images in one medium are not the best for another.
Also, since images are usually viewed via one method only (viewer,
projection, etc.) it makes more sense to have favorite images for
each viewing method seperately.

It would be impractical to require different clubs to use the
same hardware (including projection bulbs, screen, etc.) when
judging, say, PSA exhibitions.  Since all the images are viewed
under the same conditions during the same judinging, the selection 
results are usually fair.  Individual human judgement shows a lot
more variation than viewing conditions.  Should we request
standarized judges too?  <big smile>  As I have said in the past,
judging varies... If a person is doing consistantly good work
then the results will show it, despite occassional fluctuations.
