Your recollection is this matter is not accurate.

The Realist 3.5 has two strong points:  It is RELIABLE and CHEAP.
User-friendliness is not one of its strong points.  But you can
get a Realist for $100 while you cannot get a Revere, TDC Vivid or
TDC Colorist II for this price (usually).

I was a beginner without sufficient funds, 9 years ago.  The $80
Realist worked fine for me.  It might work for other beginners too
but if a beginner feels intimidated by the Realist, a *good working*
Kodak stereo might be a better choice.  If money is not a problem,
a $250 TDC Colorist II is a good choice too.

BTW, my wife cannot use my Minolta X-700 because she thinks it is
too complicated.  She prefers a P&S camera.  Somehow I don't think
she would feel comfortable with a Realist but this is just speculation
since she has not expressed any interest in taking stereo pictures.
