Nishika Weight - A question

Hello,
I recently removed the lead weight from my Nishika because
somebody humorously pointed out to me that it was added for value and
that it served no purpose. I still have the weight, truly made of lead.
I even wrote my name with it. However, when I was sharing this funny bit
of deceit with a friend, he wondered if the weight was there to help
weigh the Nishika down, thus actually having a purpose by helping the
user stabilize the camera for better picture taking. Before some of you
laugh your butts off at this suggestion (I am now all too acquainted with
the high esteem some of you hold the Nishika in.. :), does this
suggestion have any merit, even a glimmer? I am an expert at many
things, but photography is not one of them. It seemed to me that it
*might* have some basis, but I tend to think that it was just added to
fool the buyer into thinking he had a higher quality camera. Thoughtful
and kind responses to this posting would be appreciated. Thanks.
