QVus for beginners

George Themelis asked why beginners have problems with QVu
fold over stereo mounts.
Here is my opinion!!! Notice I wrote OPINION, not FACTS.
The problem with beginners using QVus is that they believe that
the QVu will solve all their mounting problems, including a proper
stereo window. Many of the cards seen in the SSA are monolithic
prints from Grand Photo stuck in a QVu with no thought to the stereo
window or distance between two like points in the stereograph. or
even tilted horizons, where lakes or oceans run downhill to one side or
the
the other. Many of these problems could be cured by trimming and using
an open face mount.
These are a few of the reasons for my not recommending QVus for
beginners. There have been two good articles in Stereo World on print
mounting, one in 1979 by Bill Patterson and one in 1984 by John Dennis.
Plus there was a good article on this subject in the PSA Journal last
year
by Stan White. I don't use all the techniques in any of these articles,
but I
recommend them for anyone who is starting out in stereo cards, because
they give a very good background on most "problems" and help beginners
to better understand good mounting procedures.
Another of my reasons is that part of the charm of stereocards is the
many
different mounts that people develope and use over the years. I call
Qvus
"Volksmounts" since they do not show any individual taste in mount
stock, or
procedures.
Of course there are many stereographers (old timers) who like them,
including
Paul Wing, and Allan Griffin, but I don't believe they will have
mounting problems.
