Updated Realist Instruction Manual is now available!
Updated Realist Instruction Manual is now available!
The Realist is the most popular stereo camera and yet no modern
instructions are available for its use. The original instruction
manual, among some good and useful information, contains out of date
information that might be confusing to the user.
This is the situation and here is what I did about it:
I took the latest Realist instruction manual (not many people have seen
this) and updated it by pasting notes in the margins and including a
quick guide on how to use the camera. The quick guide should be enough
to get a person started, but the rest of the details are useful too,
especially with the updated notes.
Here is some of the areas that are updated:
- Loading the camera: Today's films have a shorter leader and the film
loading procedure has changed. I give the new simplified instructions.
(Those who like to cut the leader longer can still use the old -
complicated - procedure; it is there)
- Use of flash: The original manual emphasizes flash bulbs. I bring this
up to date with information on modern electronic flash, how to connect it
with the camera, what aperture and shutter speed to use, etc.
- Exposure: Original instructions assume the use of ASA 10 film! I bring
this up to date by stating the "sunny day" rule and giving examples for ASA
100 film (that's more likely!)
- Some other areas updated: Manual assumes presence of DOF scale and
double-exposure prevention mechanism. I make it clear that these features
are not available in all cameras and discuss what that means. There is no
20 exp. film today. I replace this with 24 exp. film. Mounts, mounting,
slide-copying and camera repair services are no longer available from David
White. I provide a short directory of sources for supplies and services.
I will distribute this updated manual free with the cameras that I sell or
service, but will also offer it for sale to the general public (see posting
in sell-3d). BTW, I have checked with my lawyer and understand that the
camera instruction manual is *not* copyrighted. Any opinions to the contrary
are welcome for discussion.
