How come I can have two slides on the same roll of film where one is
unacceptably grainy and another you can't detect any grain at all? I
have noticed this in several films (all E6 100 ASA). Exposure, focus,
and ambient light must all play a part in perceiving grain.
One case in particular was from a roll I took while at NSA 97. I was
using Elite II 100 AS. One slide was taken on a ferry of a pair of
nesting seagulls on a docking pylon. It was dark and dreary and just
finished raining (normal Seattle day). The slide came out perfect
with no visible grain even in the monochrome sky and water. On the
same roll I took a slide of my wife and son standing on the front of
the ferry. I used a flash to fill in some of the shadows. It came out
slightly underexposed and showed a lot of grain in the flesh tones of
their faces.
I also seem to detect more grain in poorly focused shots. Why is
this?
