Yes, the common commercial films are numbered, but they're numbered for
8-perf frames, so the numbers "drift" as you go along, and since there
are 72 distinct numbers on a 36-exposure roll (not counting "0" or "E")
being applied to 54 images, you will periodically get a frame with two
numbers (4a and 5, for example).
Off the top of my head, I can't remember what the number sequence should
be in order to correctly match all pairs (and depending on how many times
you wind before taking the first image, your starting frame number can also
vary). One could probably very easily make a table that would allow this,
however, based on "if your first image is numbered X, the pairs run like
this...".
As you observed, the higher numbers will always be on the left, but if you
bracket exposures, you will have multiple similar or identical higher-
numbered images that can be paired with multiple lower-numbered images,
only one pairing of which will be correct. I can never seem to match
frames strictly by the numbers, so I order the pairs as I cut them, then
check later by freeviewing before sealing the mounts.
