>Just curious, how does one create or claim the rights to a web name?
Cost? Who's in charge of these titles anyway?

This is way off topic, but briefly there's a central organization that
registers all "personalized" domain names, such as Alex's
www.stereoscopy.com. The actual website can be located on any service
provider. When someone enters your unique name, the browser compares it t=
o
all the registered names and directs you to the actual site. If you chang=
e
service providers, you can take your domain name with you and re-register=

it at your new address and to the public nothing will appear to be any
different. All of the "paperwork" is usually done by your service provide=
r.
The registration is $100 per year. Some service providers also charge a f=
ee
for your using a unique domain name.

Since registering a domain name is relatively cheap and easy, there are a=

number of self-styled entrepreneurs around who are making a bundle by
registering names of prominent companies and/or other names that are like=
ly
to be wanted by legitimate sources, and then demanding huge sums of money=

to release them. Hence the guy who wants $50,000 for "ddd.com" and who
apparently also has tied up all sets of three initials "aaa.com, bbb.com,=

etc." There are many domain names like "mcdonalds.com" (for example--I'm
not sure it's one of them) that are registered to people who are unrelate=
d
in any way to the companies whose names they represent and are not using
the sites. They are merely holding the domain names hostage and demanding=

mammoth sums for their "investment".
