*****  Could be done, but consider how far fewer Realists exist compared to
Nikons. I'm sure the digital backs for Nikons are not very widely used, so
low volumes make it strictly a professional choice when needed. Doing the
same for a realist would be prohibitively expensive, though you might be
able to adapt a Nikon digital back....?

There's more to the idea of digital than fitting an adapter to an older
camera. One of the big advantages of digital is the lack of film to deal
with, allowing a camera design, especially for stereo work, to be made
flexible. You could get the lenses closer together for closeups or portrait
work or separate them for distant scenes, without any worry about dealing
with rolls of film and exposure spacings.

The primary advantage to a digital back on an existing camera is the use of
the professional range of optics. However there's no reason a digital camera
couldn't be designed to accomodate existing professional optics.
