Mounting gauges: Realist vs European

The terms "Realist format" and "European format" are commonly used
to differentiate between 5P and 7P stereo images.  But what is the
difference between a Realist format mounting gauge and a European
format mounting gauge?  Why does the RBT mount instruction sheet
say to use a European format gauge instead of a Realist format gauge?
