Thanks Richard, Dave and Peter, for your thoughts.
Apodization sounds interesting, although it sounds
like it is intended to create multiple hard-edged apertures
and so somehow make the diffraction cancel out.
Also, since it's about astronomy, any effect may
depend on parallel beams. Using a window screen
wouldn't seem to eliminate the hard edges, only
multiply them.
Dave's thought that a single fuzzy gradient
would cause a larger circle of confusion appears
to assume that the outer edge of the gradient is
at least as large as the hard-edged aperture that
it's being compared to. But what if it's smaller?
I mean, I don't know the math or optics much, and
a circle of confusion is just how I muddle on
through . . .
