  Many moons ago there was a discussion on
one of the rec.photo groups about pinhole
cameras and using a soft edged aperture.

  The idea was to make it out of some
material that went from clear to fully
opaque with a transition region that was
partially transmissive. Rather than the
usual hole in brass stock.

  I don't recall if this was brainstorming
or if someone had actually done it. I also
don't recall if any optic guru had shot
down the idea. Maybe some other list member
can recall.
