Stretch noticed by novice

An interesting comment during my IIT presentation: A professor asked about
the distortion he could see in one picture of my wife and son by the
computer.

>From his description I realized that he was talking about "stretch". I was
surprised to hear this comment because he was sitting a few rows in front
of the projector, maybe not at the "ortho seat" but not very far away from
it. Being used to seeing those pictures from the projectionist's spot
(w/5" lenses in the TDC) I do not sense this distortion except for extreme
cases.

I put this observation in the same category as the frozen action,
cardboarding and "back-drop" backgrounds which are often noticed by people
first exposed to stereo while are not observed any more by more experienced
stereo workers. These observations are, IMO, a good sign because they show
that the person can see stereo well and he takes it seriously enough to
compare it with the real thing.

Talking about taking stereo seriously, in the same slide I hesitated to
point to my son's anaglyph glasses with my laser pointer, thinking "you
should NEVER point the laser beam to a person's eyes!!!"
