Are you sure he was close to the "ortho seat"? Whenever I've done
the calculation for my 5" lens'd setup one almost has one's nose
to the screen to be ortho. Well, not quite, but close. A few rows
in front of the projector sounds like a stretched spot.
I've now got my projector quasi-permanently setup in my new hobby-room
and I've played with walking around seeing how the stretch varies,
and indeed the calculated spot near the front is where things looked
more natural. Looking near the projector, it's stretch city. One can
get sort-of used to it, but if one walks around and sees things squeeze
and expand (Shab... this may be a good exercise for a club meeting after
clearing the chairs out of the way, it's much more real than a series of
slides.. except everybody will start trying to get the seat I usually
try for and get -- near the center front) "ortho" (or lack thereof)
becomes real blatant and obvious. At least with my test slides.
