How people see is unique and personal. A person's visual apparatus
includes eyes, eye muscles, inner-ear balance mechanism, whole-body
balancing, etc, etc. The most important component of this system is the
adaptive process that is developed in early childhood and fine-tuned
during the person's life.
Some people rely on focus, object overlap and relative physical
movement to determine "near-far" visual relationships more than, or
instead of, differentiation between the visual experience of their two
eyes which is the only distance clue provided by stereo photography.
Some of the readers of this list can comfortably free-view Holmes
cards. I gave up trying a long time ago, and I wish Stereo World would
print every pair with 2.25" infinity separation.
But until someone develops flawless full color, full sized, full motion
holography...
BTW, I saw the "Cheaper by the Dozen" on American Movie Classics last
night, and at one point Fred Gilbreth (Clifton Webb) was looking into a
stereo viewer that had a Holmes-type hood and handle, but with twin 35mm
filmstrip rolls. Has anyone seen a contraption like this before?
