If you'll permit me to pick a nit, the '50s was the age of Cinerama and Cinemascope so
moviegoers were accustomed to *wider* frames. Of course the minority of films produced
were widescreen but it was around. Hollywood was at war with television and used color,
widescreen, stereo sound, and larger film formats to make movies 'bigger' than TV.
