Realist Flash- Battery struggle

I have a really hard time making AA batteries fit in my Realist flash.
Are new batteries slightly bigger than old ones? 
This does, however, keep me from blasting away at the Girlfriend and cats
with scarce and expensive flashbulbs, so maybe it's a Good Thing...
