P3D Re: Filter Bracket for Realist

My primative filter bracket consists of a piece of flex pipe (similar to
a gooseneck lamp material)
I flattened one end with a hammer and drilled a hole.....this end mounts
to the tripod thread of the camera. ( I can also use the tripod) I used
a large clamp from a clipboard, drilled a hole in the center, and
mounted it to the other end of the flex pipe. The flex of the pipe
allows me to move te filters in many directions and accommodates any
type of filter since it "clamps" to any filter inserted. Any filter or
mismatch filter sizes can be used as long as they are placed directly in
front of each lense. I placed a strip of adhesive felt on each side of
the clamp to avoid scratching filters.
The PROBLEMS are ....it looks ridiculous! Much time is required to align
the filters and bend the tubing in front of the lenses. If I'm not
careful, I risk the chance of the clamp getting in the way of the
lensepath. Also, the filters must be as close to the lenses as possible
to avoid wierd reflections and abberations. Too much space between the
filter and lense is undesirable. Also remember that some filters will
require an exposure adjustment. A coincidental plus to this rig is the
ability to mix and match filter sizes. Large polarizers will also
eclipse the viewfinder window which will allow you to set the
polarization (circular) correctly.
The other plus....using Cokin graduated filters allows me to preview the
effect through the viewfinder. Keep in mind that the use of filters on a
non-SLR camera does not allow you to look through the lense and preview
the effect.
I am still working on a better way to construct a holder giving me the
advantages as described.
My latest bracket......my girlfriend Karen....I yelled "quick, hold
these filters in front of the lenses" as she stooped down below me and
reached up to hold the filters in position. The shots turned out great!
Maybe I found my new bracket. :-) :- ) MARK DOTTLE
