I have an interesting use for the RBT mounts. I bought a few of the SV1
Slide viewers from Reel 3D for passing around to friends but I became
quickly irritated with the way that light passes around the side and
bottom of the slide. I used the mount as a masking device.
I used the black half of a Realist format RBT mount and cut off the tabs
with an exacto knife. I drilled a 1/2" semi-circle on the top of the
mount to ease removing the slide. I then split the viewer in half at the
glue weld and glued the RBT mount to the part of the viewer that the
lenses are on.
I put the side that had previously had the tabs on towards the lenses so
the shiny border would not be seen in the viewer. I sealed any remaining
light leaks with black electrical tape (I'm sure somebody could come up
with a more elegant way to do this). I then reglued the viewer together
and found the images to be much more pleasing.
The mount also acted as an alignment guide to keep the slide from
falling back and forth in the viewer. This was important because I
replaced the lenses on the viewer with Achromats (an idea I got from
Alan Lewis's excellent stereo project home page).
