I have experienced this effect quite strongly while driving down Interstate
15 along the Wasatch mountain range North and South of Salt Lake City.
The Salt Lake basin is pretty flat and runs right to the base of the
mountains which abruptly rise up several thousand feet. Heading South
at 60 mph, I can get a definite perception of depth by seeing the 
nearer peaks change relationship to the ones farther away...
