My understanding is that it was not a fictitious assignment, although I 
could be mistaken.  I think Brigandi was the one who had to cut down
the Keystone negatives to save on storage costs.  That's why the 
Keystone/Mast collection at the California Museum of Photography does
not contain all the stereographs issued by Keystone, Underwood and 
Underwood, e.g.

Just to satisfy your curiousity, nearly all of Joplin's music is
ragtime.  Unless the video used some of Joplin's waltzes or marches,
the songs you are used to hearing performed as rags were not being
played as Joplin intended them to be played.   Perhaps you are 
referring to the tendancy to play ragtime at a lightening fast pace.
Joplin himself wrote printed instructions on some of his pieces like
"Leola" which stated, "Notice! Don't play this piece fast. It is never
right to play 'rag-time' fast. Author."  Hope this helps...
