I've noted this effect also. When I get into a really dark environment
(not too difficult in the mountain West) at reasonably high altitude
(~8000' and above) on a moonless night the Milky Way is quite visible.
I have experienced several times the illusion of 3D in looking at it
vs the brighter "foreground" stars...
