The Amateur Photographic Exchange Club just finished another very
successful exchange of self made print stereographs. Some amazing views
this time. You can find the stereographs at the APEC web site:
http://www.dddesign.com/3dbydan/apec
**** Our next exchange happens February 28th, deadline for getting in
on that one is January 21st. ****
APEC is always interested in new members, so if you'd like to join, or
if you'd just like to know more, let me know.

Here's a summary of how the club works:
***************
Amateur Photographic Exchange Club
** History **
In the 1860s, before commercial stereographs were widely available,
pioneer stereographers formed the famous Amateur Photographic Exchange
Club. Several times a year each member sent every other member one
self-produced stereograph. The club had a number of rich and powerful
contributors (Oliver Wendell Holmes was an honorary member), and today
surviving APEC views sell at premium prices.
Now the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club has been reborn. Four times
a year each of our members exchanges one self-produced print stereograph
with every other member. APEC teaches us valuable stereo photographic
techniques and it helps us amass a collection of other stereographers'
best work.
** How the club works **
Basically everyone makes a bunch of print stereographs, mails them to me,
Greg Kane. I sort them and mail them back.
In contrast to the slide and print circuits run by the NSA and other
groups, APEC members keep and own the stereo views they receive with each
exchange.
Membership is free. Of course we do print and mount the views we send
in, and we each cover our own postage.
Four times a year we each exchange one stereograph with every other club
member. For example, if there are 30 folks in the club, we each send in
30 stereo views. We don't send 30 different views, we send 30 (or
whatever) copies of the same view.
We exchange mounted print stereographs in either of two formats: classic
Holmes, 3.5 by 7 inches, and; modern View-Magic 4 inches high by any
width -- usually 6 inches. Basically anything that can ve viewed with a
Holmes stereoscope, an over and under model PV4000 View Magic viewer or a
$4 lorgnette viewer. We like innovation. Pin hole shots, black and
white, macros and other unusual work is weclomed -- encouraged,
celebrated! -- but we do not exchange unmounted prints, Loreos,
photocopies, antique views, or slides.
We use centralized mailing, which saves a bundle on postage. Everyone
sends their package of views to the View Redistributor, who sorts the
views, repackages them and mails them back.
APEC members who shoot Realist format slides often send their slides to
Grand Photo, (612) 699-9886, to get prints made. GP also sells Q-Vu
mounts. Although GP does do good work, they are not the only option:
with a little coaxing your local photo lab may well provide a similar
service.
Our experience levels vary: we have accomplished professionals
photographers and we have rank amateurs -- regardless of experience
anyone willing to make an effort is welcome. We work to keep the club
friendly and informal. No prizes, no rankings, no competitions.
Friendly. Informal. Fun.
** APEC calendar **
We have four exchanges a year. Views are due at the View Redistributor's
on the last day of February, May, August, November. The deadline for
letting the View Redistributor know you are taking part falls roughly 6
weeks before each exchange.
d j FEBRUARY (confirm by January 21st)
m a MAY (confirm by April 21st)
j j AUGUST (confirm by July 21st)
s o NOVEMBER (confirm by October 21st)
** How to join: **
Just let me, Greg Kane, know you want in. Then follow the steps on The
APEC Checklist.
The quickest and cheapest way to contact me is via email, though
snail-mail is fine too. Since we aren't revenue generating, I don't have
money to return long-distance phone calls, but you can reach me at home
by phone most evenings.
