Most of the older coatings used on brass are lacquer based and will come
off with lacquer thinner applied with steel wool. The newer coatings are
usually urethane or even epoxy based. I have yet to find any strippers
that are worthwhile, so resort to removing the film with abrasives (200
to 1000 grit paper) followed by tripoli and rouge on the buffer. Labor
intensive but effective.
