I just finished my first entry in APEC III, and while there's a fair
amount of work, I don't think its as crushing as Larry & Dr. T are
implying. Yes, there is a certain amount of legwork and cutting and
mounting, but not that much. I think that nearly all the mounting work
was done over 2 weekend days, and 3 weeknights (maybe 30 hours). Quite
a bit of that time was learning curve, since I had never mounted prints
before (as the first 6 or 7 copies I made show painfully :( ) I expect
that now that I know what I'm doing with mounting materials, it will go
faster (and come out better) the next time).
Even if you say, gee Mark, 30 or so hours is too much of a commitment,
keep in mind that the schedule is fixed (Feb, May, Aug, Nov), so you have
3 months to come up with that time. I'm pretty busy most of the time
(45-50 hr. full time job, part time teaching 6-9 hrs/week, 1 night a week
doing a radio show, as well as family responsibilities (though no kids
yet) and an internet addiction :) ). I found the time to get my APEC stuff
done in relatively short order the last time. If I can do it, I bet
anyone who wants to can...unless you're courting death through
workaholism. In that case, you've got bigger troubles than not having time
for APEC views! :)
C'mon George & Larry, Try it! Worst thing that happens is that you can't
get stuff finished in the 6 weeks you have now, and then you have an extra
three months to finish (for the May exchange). If you can put 1/2 of a
weekend day or one weeknight each week between now and the Feb. deadline
towards the exchange, you'll be finished in time. And for May, you have
15 weeks. That averages to 2 hrs/week between now and then.
Am I too optimistic here? I don't think I'm underestimating the time (but
then, Greg didn't make me fill out a timesheet for APEC) ;)
