P3D Ok already on stereo lies...

Well the "stereo lies" thing was intentionally
provocative, and I expected it to start a
possibly interesting thread on factors that
influence the perception of depth in stereo images,
or even the false perception of depth.
Unfortunately, I should have been more sensitive to how
easily people can take a posting in a negative way.
I don't want to waste bandwidth on the list, but let
me assure all of you that I am not a fool or a liar.
I fully acknowledge that my posting could easily leave
that impression, and I apologize. The references to deception
and social psychology were intended as a tongue in cheek poke
at the discipline and past use of questionable methods. Clearly
I need to use more :-) :-)
I do not routinely misrepresent flat slides as being stereo.
I only mislabeled a flat side to two close friends, and
yes, with an N of 2 it is not remarkable that "not a single
person" objected. Nonetheless, I expected them to see that
it was flat and then laugh at my practical joke. The irony is
that my surprise was due to my tendency to be frank, I expected
them to behave the same. Since they did not it raised issues of
social influence on perception relevant to the Asch studies of
social conformity. Rest assured, I could design an ethical and
iron tight study to investigate the phenomenon, if I had sufficient
desire, time, and resources.
Sorry for personalizing this thing.
Now back to 3-D stuff.
Harolddd.
PS. The flat side had the image plane at the stereo window.
