>From Kevin Brownlow's "The Parade's Gone By", an incredibly wonderful
history of 'silent' films:
"The idea of a Yukon picture came to him (Chaplin) at Pickfair. Mary
Pickford had given Douglas Fairbanks a set of three-dimensional
stereoscopic cards. When Chaplin found Fairbanks with a library of these
photographs, he spent an afternoon examining them. A number dealt with
the days of 1898, and so the basic idea for "The Gold Rush" was born."
