Of course it is. That's why the color in your stereoscopic photographs
isn't colour. Us uncouth 'mericans thought the shorter form made
more sense, and adopted it. (Noah Webster may have decreed it, but
if the uncouth ones hadn't adopted it, "color" would have gone the
way of Teddy Roosevelt's simplified spelling ideas. (We elected Roosevelt
commander in chief, not linguist in chief). TR, by the way, was a fan of
stereoscopic photography, and a popular subject of stereoscopic
views. Hey, I have to keep this on topic somehow.
Language and spelling are fluid, and change as the people who
speak/spell change.
The oligarchs (English PhD's) may decree proper uses, but what most people
actually do will end up the correct usage eventually (the split infinitive
rule has greatly weakened thanks to Star Trek). I mean, give common folk
apostrophes to mark possession, and they start using them for plural's.
It's still wrong, but for how much longer?
Anyone who wants to discuss this should probably write me off list. :)
Maybe we can start spell-3d? How bout it, Bob!
