Attention: Gabriel Jacob, Dale Walsh, David Kesner, Paul Talbot,
Simon Bell, all 3D'ers in ice storm areas as well as 3D'ers
in flood, tornado, earthquake, and other disaster areas,
Larry Haines, Cliff Howard, Eric Goldstein,
Re: "I really think there is enough different and varying subject matter
to warrant an entire show at NSA '98. Maybe several of the 3D'ers in
that area could collaborate and produce what could be the best show
at the convention"
Yes, yes, yes! Could be spectacular on NSA 21' wide screen with two
7 or 8 perf (full frame) images (or three square or 5 perf or "Realist"
format images, or four half-frame or 4 perf or Nimslo format images)
side by side covering the entire 21' wide screen. Use of wideangle
lenses (17mm-28mm) and horizontal rotation of camers(s) on a
steady tripod could produce spectacular panoramas
I have used a special device purchased years ago from Spiratone
and still available in New York mail order houses to attach between
the tripod and camera(s) (any stereo camera or two cameras on a
bar) with inscribed marks for various focal length lenses and a
"setback" for the camera so the rotation is at the lens instead of the
film plane, but you don't have to be that precise. As you rotate the
camera(s), just look through the viewfinder and overlap the two, three,
or four images slightly using (overlapping) some landmark (tree,
bush, rock, flower, etc.) at adjacent edges, and then when you
mount you can crop off the overlapped parts to join the images to
create a panorama, or you can use "feathered-edge" masks to
create seamless panoramas, or you can leave a small gap so the
images will appear to be viewed through two, or three, or four
windows at the screen.
If you will use GEPE mounts, we can use two or four or six or eight
KODAK EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA (with automatic focus) projectors at NSA.
Please use KODAK UNIVERSAL 80-slide trays.
Use GEPE 6102 (2x18x24mm) with two different LEFT view film chips
in one mount and the corresponding two different RIGHT film chips in
another mount (so that all LEFT views will be in one carousel tray and
all RIGHT views will be in another tray for projection by two projectors,
or with four projectors, we can have the two GEPE 6102 mounted pairs
side by side, showing four of the half-frame images simultaneously to
fill the 21' wide screen. The projectors would be advanced manually.
No fade dissolves. Simple, but spectacular for images made with
Kin-dar, Hyponar, 3-D Magic, Trilogy, Nimslo, Rittai, Wizard, Photon,
Stereo-Tach, Stitz, Pentax beam splitter, etc., or to crop wider images.
If you don't want to do panoramas with four half-frame images side by
side, you could use the above described mounting to show a self
portrait of yourself, the camera setup, a medium image, and a closeup
image as the four images side by side, or do before and after images
side by side, or the same scene in four seasons side by side, or four
sequence shots side by side, or four side by side comparisons of four
different exposures (perhaps at half-stop intervals), or four different films,
or one image with no filters beside an image with a polarizer beside an
image with a polarizer and a warming filter or cooling filter or star filter,
etc. The creative possibilities are endless.
Of course, all of the above can be applied to any subject matter,
floods, tornado or earthquake or mudslide or wind damage, nature,
animals, architecture, photo-journalism, table top, etc.
For Stereo Realist format or to mask down any wider format, combine
one side of GEPE 6301 (24mm x 24mm) with one side of a vertically
oriented GEPE 6801 (21mm x 28mm) to create a 21mm x 24mm
opening (the closest GEPE match to Realist format), and if you put
your mounted slides in six carousel (KODAK UNIVERSAL 80-slide
trays preferred), at NSA we can use six KODAK EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA
(automatic focus) projectors to show three stereo images side by
side on the screen either simultaneously, or first LEFT end of screen,
then CENTER of screen, then RIGHT end of screen (as I did with David
Burder's three shows several times at NSA Conventions (in Milwaukee,
Rochester, and Bellevue) advancing the projectors manually with no fade
dissolve. Simple, but spectacular. All creative possibilities described
above apply.
For 7 perf (or image height cropping for European Format), or to crop
wider images, use GEPE 6801 (21mm x 28mm), and for 7 perf images
from Verascope F40, Belplasca, Iloca !, or FED Stereo cameras (or to
crop full frame images) use GEPE 6803 (24mm x 28mm). For 8 perf or
full-frame images, use GEPE 6802 (24mm x 32mm, which is 4mm
narrower than full frame 35mm, making it a perfect solution where slight
horizontal cropping is needed to join two 3-D pairs into one panorama,
and also to "set the stereo window" and easily allows for mounting
compensation when parallel convergence settings are used exclusively).
At NSA we can use four KODAK EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA (automatic focus)
projectors to project your four KODAK UNIVERSAL 80-slide trays
manually to show two stereo images side by side, filling the 21' wide
screen, or if you put your slides in eight trays, we can use eight KODAK
EKTAGRAPHIC IIIA projectors twith fade dissolve. My ELECTRO-SONIC
can operate the eight projectors, and I can add the proper "Sync" signals
for automatic operation by duping your tape (and at the same time
converting your mono audio to simulated stereo sound) while you run
through your show using the ES manual controls, but this must be done
on Thursday, August 6, at the NSA convention after we get the equipment
set up by noon in the Stereo Theater. The same creative possibilities as
described above apply.
Make sure that the WHITE side (which has the Anti-Newton Ring glass
against the smooth back of your film chip) of the GEPE mounts faces
the projector lamps and is spotted in the LOWER LEFT CORNER AS
HAND VIEWED (RED or ORANGE spots for the LEFT view slide and
GREEN or BLUE spots for RIGHT view slides) to reflect heat and keep
your film chips cooler, and that the BLACK side (and your film emulsion
or rough or less shiney side) faces the lenses and screen to minimze
internal reflections inside the projector.
Please mark all LEFT view trays with RED or ORANGE tape and all
RIGHT view trays with GREEN or BLUE tape, and with liquid WHITE-OUT,
mark a vertical line above the #20 slide mark so we can install and align
the trays on the projectors quickly in the dark.
I suggest that each 3D'er do his own separate show rather than trying
to combine slides from different makers, as each maker has his own
style, as some makers may have two images side by side while others
may have three images side by side while others may have four images
side by side (calling for three different projector setups), and as mounting
may vary from maker to maker. It is important to have correct and
consistant mounting so that when the projectionist aligns (superimposes)
the frames of the mask on the screen, there will be no need for vertical
adjustments (all homologous points will be at the same height) and
homologous infinity points will be no more than about 2 1/2 inches apart
on the screen. If you use the REEL 3-D Mounting gauges to mount for
a 6' high screen, your infinity points will be no more than 3 inches apart
(which is OK) on the NSA 7' or 84" high screen, and/or the NSA
projectionist.can slightly merge the frames (adjust them closer together
horizontally) so that they are no more than about 2 1/2 inches apart on
the screen.
I also invite each maker (presenter) to include a 3-D self portrait, and
3-D shots of the the various camera setups, as well as a 3-D title slide.
A tip for cold-weather photography: I learned the hard way years ago
photographing in cold weather in Montana to always carry zip-lock bags
for each camera, each separate lens, and each lens case to be sealed
in before going from the cold into any warmer area (building, vehicle, or
inside your jacket) to prevent condensation from ruining a camera, or lens
(condensation inside lenses can later promote growth of mildew or mold),
or weakening a lens-case bottom (which later fell out, dropping a $500
zoom lens on a rock).
GEPE mounts and the mounting gauges can be ordered from REEL 3-D.
Please contact me as soon as possible if you can bring or send a show
and/or conduct a workshop at NSA Richmond, August 6-10, 1998.
Forms will be sent out with STEREO WORLD, and must be returned to
me before the end of May so we can have the schedule arranged and the
program printed, but I would like to hear from you as soon as possible
as to Title, subject matter, format, audio, etc. of your show and/or
subject of workshop you can conduct. Contact:

(my FAX stopped working when I upgraded to Windows 95)
We have the best setup ever in Richmond, with the possibility for seating
up to 500 viewers, with 6 hours of projection and simultaneous workshops
on Friday, August 7, six hours on Saturday, August 8, and four hours on
Sunday afternoon, August 9 (The Stereo Theater will be dark Sunday
morning, August 9, to allow everyone to attend the TRADE FAIR in the
adjacent Convention Center via a walkway over the street from the Marriott
Hotel.). Whether we repeat Friday shows on Saturday or not will depend on
number of shows accepted. In Bellevue we had to repeat shows because
of the small room and because we only had 18 presenters with a total of
6 hours of projection time. Field trip will be on Monday, August 10.
Let me hear from you! See you in Richmond. Bill Duggan
