Dear photo-3d'ers,

Here is a final update about the upcoming 1998 Stereoscopic Displays
& Applications (SD&A) and The Engineering Reality of Virtual Reality
(TERoVR) Conferences.

DATES

Just a reminder on the dates:
Short Course "Stereoscopic Display Application Issues" Sunday Jan 25
Stereoscopic Displays and Applications IX Monday-Wednesday Jan 26-28.
The Engineering Reality of Virtual Reality 98 Thursday Jan 29

at the San Jose Convention Centre, San Jose, California.

NEWS FLASH - TITANIC IN 3D

We have managed to secure 3D video footage of the Titanic which was
filmed by Emory Kristof of The National Geographic Society.
The footage will be shown on Wednesday 25th at 1pm (just before the
keynote presentation). We will probably repeat the footage again
 during the afternoon.

THE ROOM

This year we have again been allocated conference room "J4"
for both conferences and the short course. It is located in the
main convention centre near the Hilton Hotel. It is fairly easy
to find. Please refer to the map below.

In addition, Wednesday afternoon's demo session will be held in
 room "J2".

3D-AV FACILITIES DURING PAPER PRESENTATIONS

As in past years we will have both stereo video projection and stereo
35mm slide projection equipment available. Lowell Noble from QD
Technology has loaned us his "3D Black Screen" stereoscopic video rear-
screen projection system for the conference. As usual 3D slides will
be projected on a silver screen. Passive circular polarised 3D glasses
will be provided. Indications are there will be plenty of good 3D to
 see.

PANEL SESSION

On Tuesday afternoon (4:20pm - 5:20pm) we have organised a special
panel session. The topic of discussion is "Standards for 3D Stereoscopic
Imaging". Mike Weissman (HIT Lab) is the moderator. Panel Members
are: Jeff Halnon (StereoGraphics), Dave Qualman (NuVision), Donald
Sawdai (University of Michigan/VREX), Andrew Woods (Curtin University)

KEYNOTE PRESENTAION - (IMP) Imager for Mars Pathfinder

This year our keynote speaker will be Peter Smith with "Imager for
Mars Pathfinder experiment (IMP): a multispectral stereoscopic imaging
system". Peter was the Principle Investigator for the design of the IMP
(Imager for Mars Pathfinder) used during the recent extremely successful
Mars mission. Peter's presentation should be of great interest and
he also plans to have plenty of 3D footage to show us.

DEMONSTRATION SESSION

The demo session this year will be held in the huge conference room "J2"
(Wednesday 28th Jan 2:50pm-5:30pm). This session is open to all
conference participants to show off their equipment.
During the demo session 3D videos and 3D slides will also be shown in
 the conference room "J4"

THE CONFERENCE PROGRAM @ THE CONFERENCE WEB SITE

The Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference now has an official
 web site:

        http://info.curtin.edu.au/~iwoodsa/stereoscopic

The schedule of papers for the two conferences is now available at this
 site.

You may also wish to visit this site to see a review of the 1997 and
1996 conferences - in words and pictures. You may even be in the
 pictures yourself.

CONFERENCE DINNER

As in previous years we will again be organising an informal conference
dinner. It will be on the Tuesday night at about 7:30pm -
pencil this in your diary now. We will advise you of the venue
 during the conference.
Please note there is no host (Sorry, no free dinner).

SHORT COURSE

The Stereoscopic Display Application Issues short course is
scheduled for the Sunday before the conference proper starts
(Sunday 25th January). This year it is a full day course
but please note that separate registration is necessary to attend
 this course.

This also happens to be Superbowl Sunday - but don't expect to be able
to see the Superbowl in 3D... ;-)

FINALLY

We hope you'll be able to make it.

Best Regards from the conference committee:

Scott Fisher, John Merritt, Mark Bolas, Shojiro Nagata, Michael Weissman,
Andrew Woods, Jim Humphries, Linda Jacobson & Henry Sowizral

Only 10 days to go to the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference
