P3D Cha-cha tripod accessory: options?

Hi!

Thanks for reading my post!

What sort of solutions have people come up with for using their standard
SLR to take stereo pictures with a tripod? There is, as I've been told, the
"Cha cha" method (coined by Paul Wing?), wherein the photographer shifts
himself, and the camera, in between exposures. Or, a macro focus rail comes
to mind, but those are spendy. However, the focus rail's ability to hold
the camera steady is attractive to me, and is therefore more appealing than
cha-chaing. Is there a product availabe that would allow me to simply
"toss" the camera from one side of the stereo base to the other? You know,
like some kind of pivoting swing arm. The camera might be swung left until
it comes to rest on the surface of a small platform, I guess, for the first
exposure, and then swung right for the second. The length of this pivoting
rod would dictate the stereo base. Possible? Practical? Stupid?

Tell me your solutions, please. I'd love to hear them.

Lefty
