Series sized filters are unthreaded filters designed to fit into an adapter
ring with a retainer ring to hold it in place. The rings were at one time
available in a HUGE assortment of sizes.  I sold this stuff for many years
and I would bet there were at least 250 or more different sizes. When you
talk about a particular Series filter, you might have threaded adapter
rings in a dozen different sizes including slip on types, and Bayonet
styles.

You would measure your lens threads and buy an adapter that fit, or measure
the outside of the barrel and buy a slip on type. You could use the same
series sized filters in a variety of different adapters. You could also by
step-up and step-down rings to convert one adapter to a different thread
size.
