That's right. NASA is using it to dramatically improve the resolution of
images from space probes. There is some mathematically oriented interest
group who particularly enjoy researching and developing these specialized
algorithms. NASA  is one of the users of their work. Other applications are
being researched and developed.  When you know your images are of the same
object/scene, the differences between several exposures of the same scene
provide a means to calculate a much higher resolution than any one image
contains. Some of their detailed asteroid pictures are derived from 20 or
more shots, each with very little visible detail.
