Glass plates were available in the middle 60's from Eastman Kodak in photo
emulsions, if memory serves. I believe they were available special order
in fairly small quantities. The ordering store had to be a "pro" store.
This designation gave you access to the scientific and technical products.
I remember ordering DoubleX, I think, or was it Super Panchro Press? It
usually arrived in the normal delivery cycle. Astro photo plates took
longer to receive, an interpreter to order, and sometimes arrived in a
special shipment packed with dry ice.
Unfortunately, I never used any plates, so I can't answer any
other questions about them. I just worked in a really large camera store
as a kid. I was more interested in "modern" state of the art stuff. Oh,
well.
