P3D Slide Bars

I am just begining to use two cameras for stereo work and am looking for
a suitable bar to mount the cameras on. My purpose is to make longer
distance stereo pictures which have stereo effect not normally visable
with twin lens cameras. I have found a bar made, by a man named Tim
Chervenak of Jasper Engineering in California, specifically for such
work. He is asking $169 for it and he tells me the cameras can be
located close together, or as far as about 12 inches apart. Susan
Pinsky says it is of very good quality. I have noticed a track sold by
Edmunds Scientific which is 24 inches long and can mount two platforms
which are 2..25 inches wide. I would have to do some minor modification
of those parts to make them work but they would be quite accurate. That
assembly would permit separations of about 19 inches and would cost
$275. The only experience I have had so far is rocking back and forth
to achieve two pictures with a single camera - not very accurate or
satisfactory. I have two questions which I hope someone can answer. Is
there anything else available? If I am going to buy a slide bar I
would like to get one that will have maximum usefullness. How much
separation do I need for most pictures? I do realize that there will be
some pictures requiring very large separations but those will naturally
be few.
