In a message dated 98-02-07 12:12:31 EST, you write:

<< I would encourage the various members of P3D, who are knowledgeable with
optics theory (Bercovitz and Abrahams come to mind), to have a look at
Dunkley's site, because the effect really is quite interesting. (Ken, you
will have to re-announce your URL, because I've lost track of it at the
 moment.)

Dear Boris, I appreciate your comments and hope that it will inspire
other P3D members to try to detect the 3-DVG effect. The truth is
:not everyone sees it. And clearly, your assessment of differental
chromatic aberration is the starting point for getting a handle on
what one is observing.

However, careful examination will show that differental chromatic
aberration, a major component of the effect, does not provide
a suitable (complete) explanation. I have attempted to do this
in my SPIE paper (Vol.1915 Stereoscopic Displays and
Applications IV, 1993, p.132 - 140) but I will be the first to
admit that it is not the last word. My hope is that a grad
student in vision science will take on the job as a doctoral
thesis and write a more diffinative explanation.

However, what you need to know is that no matter how good your
initial results were, it gets better by a conservative factor of two if you
use the advanced 3-DVG. The advanced 3-DVG uses illocal frames
(that make the picture appear life size) and variable diameter
pinholes (that provide increased depth sensation). Basicially, it feels
like you are looking through a View Master with a narrower viewing
angle.
